Businesses are understandably asking what Artificial Intelligence can do for them.
There’s another question receiving far less attention:
What happens when it isn’t there?
Episode 5 of AI Matters turns the AI adoption conversation on its head.
As AI becomes embedded in automation, CRM, finance, sales, HR and other business systems, organisations risk becoming dependent on technology without fully understanding that dependency.
We’ve been here before.
Email, cloud computing, mobile phones and satnav have gradually become so embedded in everyday life that losing access to them can be remarkably disruptive. AI could follow the same path, potentially at much greater speed.
The difference is that AI may increasingly sit behind business processes rather than simply being a tool an employee chooses to open.
That creates questions around resilience. Which parts of your operation currently rely on AI? Which provider are they dependent upon? Could processes still be completed manually? Do people within the organisation retain the knowledge required to do so?
Andrew suggests a simple scenario-planning exercise: imagine arriving at work tomorrow and discovering that AI doesn’t work.
How long would it take before somebody noticed? And how long before the business began to suffer?
The key takeaway: AI strategy shouldn’t only be about adoption. It should include resilience too.
