When you walk into a shop, you probably don’t immediately think about Artificial Intelligence.

Yet retail provides some of the clearest examples of AI already operating quietly in the background.

In the first AI Matters sector deep dive, Kath and Andrew explore “hidden AI” in retail and reveal how technology businesses already own can potentially become a powerful source of operational intelligence.

Take CCTV.

Traditionally, retailers have viewed cameras primarily as security tools. But modern AI can turn video into data, helping businesses understand customer movement, demand, stock activity and how resources might be deployed across a store.

That shift illustrates something much bigger about AI adoption.

Innovation doesn’t always require buying another shiny piece of technology. Sometimes the opportunity lies in taking information the business already generates and finding better ways of analysing it.

In retail, that could help organisations understand stock movement, identify anomalies, improve customer experience, reduce losses and make better operational decisions.

It also challenges some assumptions about automation. Technology that appears to reduce costs doesn’t necessarily produce the best overall business outcome. The real question is what the data tells you about what is actually happening.

The key takeaway: before investing in more AI, businesses should ask what useful data they’re already collecting and whether they’re doing enough with it.
