Northbridge Construction employed 180 people across six busy sites. Safety inspections were largely manual, incidents were reported inconsistently, and equipment theft was increasing.
The company introduced AI monitoring through its existing CCTV cameras, supported by body-worn cameras for designated site supervisors. The system flagged potential hazards, including missing protective equipment, blocked walkways, unsafe access and workers entering restricted plant zones.
Alerts went to supervisors for verification and action. During one shift, the system identified a worker approaching an operating excavator’s exclusion zone, allowing the supervisor to intervene before an incident occurred.
The technology helped identify the risk. The supervisor remained responsible for assessing the situation and responding.
Spotting patterns across sites
A central dashboard helped managers identify recurring risks across projects. When they discovered that trips were increasing around delivery areas, they changed storage layouts, improved lighting and adjusted housekeeping routines.
Outside working hours, intrusion alerts helped security teams investigate unauthorised access. Visual checks also flagged damaged fencing, spills and deteriorating barriers.
The six-month pilot
The illustrative outcomes over six months were:
- 28% fewer reported near misses
- Eight hours less inspection administration each week
- Two attempted equipment thefts avoided
Human oversight, clear communication with staff and controlled access to footage supported adoption throughout the pilot.
From site operations to smarter delivery
Site safety is one area where AI could support construction teams. Tender writing, project administration, reporting and data analysis offer other opportunities to save time and help people make informed decisions.
For construction businesses considering AI, the first step is identifying where teams are losing time or need better information. This helps establish where the technology could be useful, how it would fit into existing processes and what skills staff would need to use it effectively.
